Indigenizing the Literacy Curriculum

Indigenizing the Literacy Curriculum
The CR4YR team believes strongly in the importance of honouring the First Peoples’ Principles of Learning in our reading programs.  In addition, primary teachers wishing to enrich their classroom/school libraries with Aboriginal literacy and materials are encouraged to explore the following resources, which are highly recommended by our District Aboriginal Success Teachers Heather Myhre and Jessica Welder.
.
Strong Nation Readers
A wonderful collection of levelled books by BC author Terri Mack with Aboriginal themes and artwork. Click here if you wish to order books from the series.
.
Turtle Island Voices
A series of levelled books that foster a sense of identity among Aboriginal students and that enrich all students with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit perspectives. These books honour the histories, cultures, worldviews, and knowledge of Canada’s Aboriginal communities with exciting stories, information, and graphics that will pique students’ interest in learning about Aboriginal peoples and cultures.
.
First Nations Education Steering Committee
The FNESC provides many practical curriculum ideas and suggested classroom resources for literacy instruction, including the teaching resource In-Our-Own-Words.
.
Reconciliation through Indigenous Education
The UBC Faculty of Education Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), Reconciliation through Indigenous Education, provides strategies and resources that support teaching and learning of Indigenous ways of knowing in classrooms, schools & communities. Open to all.
