The path to reading success for many students lies in a multitude of factors. The foundational skills of reading do not stop being taught in the primary grades: all teachers are teachers of reading. As teachers we need to assess where the students are at with their reading and teach the skills to move them forward. We know that developing readers need to have exposure to texts that meet their instructional needs and that there are a variety of reasons as to why students are still developing some of their skills. We need to continue to teach students to be word wise, and to develop comprehension skills in order to unlock the door to reading success, but we also need to provide multiple opportunities for students to read a lot of books that they can read and that they are interested in reading. Additionally, students need explicit instructions in the long term strategies that will enable them to tackle tough texts when required to do so independently. ( Rog, 2014)
The K-7 CR4YR series will focus on the development of explicit reading skills to be used throughout elementary school that will enable students to tackle tough texts.
The CR4YR K-7 Session Goals:
- Continue with an inclusive model of universal, targeted and intensive interventions for students who struggle with reading
- Focus on literacy learning communities in the school/FOS
- Provide strategies/ideas for intervention and support for struggling readers
